About Glaucoma Procedures
Glaucoma is a progressive condition that damages the optic nerve, and without treatment it can lead to permanent vision loss. Thailand's glaucoma specialists offer the full range of surgical options for patients whose eye pressure is not adequately controlled by medication alone, or who want to reduce their dependence on daily eye drops.
The most established surgical treatment is trabeculectomy, which creates a new drainage pathway to lower intraocular pressure. It has the longest track record and remains the gold standard for moderate to advanced glaucoma. Tube shunt surgery (glaucoma drainage device) is an alternative for eyes where trabeculectomy has failed or is unlikely to succeed.
For milder or earlier-stage glaucoma, MIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery) offers a lower-risk option that can be performed on its own or combined with cataract surgery. Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a quick, outpatient laser procedure that improves fluid drainage and can delay or reduce the need for drops.
All glaucoma patients receive comprehensive assessment including visual field testing, OCT nerve fibre analysis, and pachymetry before any treatment decision is made. Surgery is followed by a structured schedule of pressure checks and medication adjustments to achieve optimal long-term control.

Before you choose
How to Decide Which Procedure Is Right for You
Start with a thorough assessment
Bring your visual field results, OCT scans and pressure history so the team can gauge how advanced your glaucoma is and what it needs.
Match the treatment to your stage
Early glaucoma may respond to laser or MIGS, while advanced cases often need trabeculectomy or a drainage device to control pressure.
Plan for lifelong monitoring
Surgery lowers pressure but glaucoma is lifelong, so we help you set up pressure checks and continued care with your eye doctor at home.
Plan recovery before booking flights
Most glaucoma surgery needs a short stay for pressure checks and healing before you fly, so your specialist can confirm the eye is stable.
