How to Approach Eye & Vision Care Abroad

Start with a full eye assessment

Vision problems can have several causes, so a thorough eye examination confirms the diagnosis and the right procedure before anything is planned.

Some are day cases, some need a stay

Laser vision correction is often a quick day case, while retinal or lens surgery can need a longer stay for review before you travel home.

Share your eye scans and records

Recent eye scans, prescriptions, and any past reports let the ophthalmologist assess you properly and give you an accurate plan in advance.

Plan the trip around recovery

Recovery time varies widely across eye procedures, so we build your travel dates around the surgeon's guidance rather than a fixed schedule.

Eye and Vision Surgery in Thailand, Answered

The questions patients ask most before booking eye care abroad.

At accredited hospitals the safety and equipment standards can match those of Western private eye centres. The real variable is choosing an accredited facility and a qualified ophthalmologist rather than a discount clinic. Every eye procedure still carries risks, so ask your surgeon to talk you through them at consultation.

It varies a lot by procedure. Laser vision correction can be a short visit with a check the next day, while cataract, lens, cornea, or retinal surgery may need a longer stay so healing can be reviewed before you fly.

It depends on the procedure and your own eyes. Vision correction and cataract surgery can restore or sharpen sight for many people, while treatments such as glaucoma surgery aim to protect the sight you still have rather than bring back vision already lost. Your ophthalmologist will give you an honest picture at consultation.

For many quick procedures you can fly within a few days once the surgeon is happy. Some retinal surgery leaves a gas bubble in the eye, and you must not fly until the bubble has gone and the surgeon clears you, as changes in cabin pressure can be dangerous. Always follow your surgeon's specific advice.

Recent eye scans, your current prescription, and any reports on past eye conditions or surgery help the ophthalmologist assess you accurately before you travel. We tell you exactly what to gather and pass it securely to your surgeon.

Reputable hospitals give you a written aftercare plan and stay reachable for remote follow-up. Confirm what is covered and for how long before you commit, and keep any local optometrist or eye clinic details to hand.

Eye and vision care in Thailand typically costs 50 to 70 percent less than at home, and more on some procedures, even after flights and accommodation, as the price table above shows.
