Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital
The private hospital of Thailand's oldest medical school, giving private patients access to the Siriraj faculty under Joint Commission International accreditation
Independently assessed by Bea Siriwat
Last reviewed 11 July 2026 · How we evaluate
Siriraj is where modern Thai medicine began, the country's first and most senior medical school under Mahidol University. Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital is its private wing, opened in 2012 next to the main Siriraj campus so that private patients can reach the same faculty and subspecialists. It was the first public hospital in Thailand to earn JCI accreditation, and organises care across 26 specialist centres covering cardiac, cancer, orthopaedic, surgical and internal medicine. For international patients who want academic depth alongside private comfort, it is a distinctive option in Bangkok.

Our Assessment of Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital
The reason to consider SiPH is what stands behind it. Siriraj is Thailand's oldest medical school and its faculty is the deepest academic bench in the country, built over more than a century of teaching, research and referral work. SiPH exists to give private patients direct access to that faculty and its subspecialists, under JCI-accredited systems and in more comfortable surroundings than the crowded public campus next door. For a patient who wants teaching-hospital expertise without the queues of a government hospital, that combination is hard to match in Bangkok.
The honest trade-off is location and positioning. SiPH sits on the Thonburi west bank beside the main Siriraj campus, away from the Sukhumvit hospital cluster that most international patients know, so getting there takes more planning. Its published centre list is also more measured than the purpose-built private tertiary hospitals across the river, and it says less publicly about specific advanced equipment. Pricing sits at the premium end of the Bangkok market, and for the most complex quaternary cases some care may route through the parent Siriraj Hospital rather than SiPH itself.
It suits patients who value academic pedigree and continuity with Thailand's leading medical school, and who want cardiac, cancer, orthopaedic, surgical or complex internal-medicine care delivered under JCI standards with private-patient comfort. It is a weaker fit for those chasing the lowest price on a routine procedure, or who specifically want a hospital in the Sukhumvit tourist belt.

About Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital
Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital, known as SiPH, is the private hospital operated by the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital of Mahidol University. It stands on the Thonburi west bank of the Chao Phraya River, next to the historic Siriraj Hospital campus, and opened in 2012 as part of a wider initiative to develop Siriraj into a leading medical institute for the region.
SiPH was created with a specific purpose. It provides private medical services to international standards and returns its profit to the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, which in turn supports Siriraj's underprivileged patients and funds the wider work of the hospital. In practice this means private patients are treated by the same faculty and subspecialists who teach and practise at Thailand's oldest medical school, but within a dedicated private facility.
Care is organised across 26 specialist treatment centres, including the Heart Center, Cancer Center, Orthopedic Center, Surgery Center and Internal Medicine Center, alongside eye, ear nose and throat, kidney, gynaecology, paediatric and other services. The Internal Medicine Center covers subspecialties including neurology. In 2013 SiPH became the first public hospital in Thailand to earn Joint Commission International accreditation, and it has been continuously reaccredited since, most recently through 2026. Its reputation rests on the academic depth of the Siriraj faculty rather than on being a new or standalone private brand.

How We Evaluated Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital
Our hospital profiles are independently researched by our editorial team. No hospital can pay to be listed here, ranked higher or reviewed favourably. For SiPH we verified facts against the hospital's own official website and its published accreditation records. Here is what we assessed.
These checks are desk-based. We verify against the issuing bodies' registers and the hospital's own published materials rather than a hospital-arranged visit, and no hospital has any say in what we publish. Read the full methodology.
We confirmed SiPH's JCI accreditation history through its published certification records, including its status as the first public hospital in Thailand to be JCI-accredited, rather than relying on marketing claims alone.
We verified that SiPH is the private hospital of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, and that private patients are treated by the faculty and subspecialists of that medical school.
We reviewed the hospital's specialist centres, confirming its Heart, Cancer, Orthopedic, Surgery and Internal Medicine centres and the subspecialties they cover.
We checked the patient services the hospital publishes for private and international patients, and noted where prospective patients should confirm arrangements directly.
We limited our verification to facts we could confirm from the hospital's official site, and did not list bed counts, equipment or services we could not independently corroborate.
How we make money. Hospitals cannot pay for placement, ranking or a favourable review anywhere on this site. We earn a coordination fee from the hospital only when you choose to book through us, and it never changes your price. That conflict is why we publish our evaluation criteria and sources on every profile, and link accreditations to the issuing bodies.
If you believe any information on this profile is inaccurate or outdated, please contact our editorial team and we will check it against the source.
